As we count down until Spring arrives, here three ways surrounding yourself with nature can help you with overall health and happiness.
1) Plants Increase Our Creativity
Did you know that plants can make us more creative in the workplace? Research at an American university found that plants played a major role in boosting the creativity and productivity of a person. The team behind the research studied just over 100 subjects over a period of eight months. The subjects were asked to perform a number of office tasks. Some were tested in an area well decorated with plants and flowers, and others in an area that had none. It was found that people who had plants in their workspace had more creative ideas and were generally more productive. So, get down to your local Bunnings and pick out a leafy green indoor plant for some workplace inspiration.
2) Gardening is a Great Stress Reliever
Researchers in the Netherlands has linked gardening to stress relief. A group of 30 people were asked to work on a stressful job anad then complete either 30 minutes of reading indoors or 30 minutes of gardening outdoors. The stress hormone cortisol was tested in the saliva of the subjects. The subjects were also asked about their moods, and it was revealed that both activities resulted in a drop of cortisol levels, however, the gardening group had a much more noticeable drop in cortisol levels and reported feeling in a better mood compared to the readers. Now you’ve got no excuse to rip out those weeds this weekend!
3) Flowers Make Us Happy
Who doesn’t love receiving flowers or walking past a beautiful garden and taking time to smell the flowers? A study conducted at Rutgers University in New Jersey, found that flowers lift people’s mood more so than other gifts. During their study, researchers sent either a mixed floral bouquet, a candle or a fruit basket to female recipients. The delivery person closely monitored the immediate reactions of the recipients and it was seen that the women who received flowers responded with a more genuine smile and reported they were still in a good mood days later. The results were almost the same when tested on male subjects!
So, if you need to get creative, be more productive, relieve stress or increase your happiness, start by surrounding yourself with a bit of mother nature.
