Dr James Carter

MBBS, BMedSci, FRACGP

After completing his specialty GP training with the Royal Australian College of General practitioners James started at Newtown Medical Centre in 2013, subsequently becoming one of the practice principals in 2018.

He enjoys all aspects of general practice and most enjoys the relationships formed with patients and their families whilst caring and managing their health and wellbeing.  He welcomes all new patients to the practice and will happily take on any medical issue whether simple or complex.  His typical day would range from seeing babies, children and families to the elderly, and it is this variety of presentations that he loves about his job.  He brings enthusiasm and compassion to each consultation, and his relaxed manner sets patients at ease.

He also has a passion for teaching the next generation of doctors.  He Supervises General practice trainees, examines aspiring GPs with the College of General Practitioners and holds the position of senior lecturer in General Practice at Deakin University.

James has applied his skills and knowledge in varied settings including working in occupational health at Barwon Health and the TAC. He has worked in student health at Deakin University and was the team doctor of the Geelong Football Clubs women’s program.

When not caring for others James is busy enjoying family life with his 4 children.  He is passionate about travel and sports, ideally combining both when the occasional holiday is snuck in!
